I didn't really know where to put this, as it really is not related to Naeldor. But, I did say I would let you guys know when I had an event scheduled on Moonlight and Shadows. So, here is the link to the event posting:

www.neverwinterconnections.com/games/ind...laygame/id/27548.htm

I would love to see some of you guys around MaS when we aren't meeting up here. It's a pretty good mod, with some great RP. They did (and still sometimes do) have some lag issues, but they did a lot in the last update to improve that. Now, it only really lags when there are 25 or so players around or too many DMs.

Anyway, if you want to give the server a shot you can go to www.moonlightandshadows.com to apply for the password. Just tell them fenix sent you. :P

I will let you know about future events I schedule there, too, if you want. If you would rather I didn't, though, just let me know.

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up. I am away this weekend, and my "bardic" type abilities are pretty much non-existent, so I can't make the session but I will have to check out this server when I get a chance.

Hey, while we're on the topic, maybe some of ya'll can help me flesh out a character background. I like playing rangers for RP purposes. Since many backgrounds have big epic stories behind them, I tried to keep mine more mundane, but with some hooks behind it to motivate the character. My idea (I used this once before, briefly, on ALFA a few years ago) is a young man who grew up in a farming family, engaged to be married. He learned to fend for himself, and live off the land a bit, as the family farm was located on the outskirts of civilization. Before his marriage, though, his fiance called off the wedding, devasting and humiliating him. Looking to restart his life, he left home, learning to life off of the land.

I've thought about giving him some darker secret, such as he protected his fiance once by killing a (masked?) assailant, who turned out to be someone he and she both knew. She was so upset, that she called off the wedding and ended the relationship. He carries that guilt with him, and thus is somewhat quiet and introspective.

The problem I've always had with this type of character build in a multiplayer setting is that it lacks the sort of hooks that encourage interaction with other characters. This type of character is a loner, and his backstory is "all about him." By contrast for example, some of you have great backstories that require you to engage others, and maybe even learn about them. I don't want to have a sullen character, where it is all about him.

So, I like rangers, but I'm not sure if that concept works in a PW. My Whipple character (from last night) is better for party interaction (or at least it proved so when I used him as a character in NWN1), but is less fun for me to play. Plus I suck at spellcasters.

I think it sounds like a wonderful concept, and I really like his dark secret.

I don't think being a loner means not interacting with others, though it does make it trickier.

Maybe he is trying to atone for killing that man by helping out where he can.

Maybe he is the quiet type that joins up with a group because they need some help and he needs some gold. Even a man that can live off the land needs to buy -some- things.

Maybe he is the kind to follow a party in the woods and make sure they get through safely, staying back but jumping in to help when they encounter something.

Quiet and reserved does not need to be sullen and hostile. He just might be the kind of guy that listens much but says little. He let's his skill do the talking. :)

Let me think on it a bit more, and I may have some more ideas for you.

On a side note, there was just a post on the MaS forums that talked about the lack of very ranger like ranger PCs. So, he would be a welcome addition, if that is where you were planning on playing.

OK, I just sent in an application over there. It got a bit long. Here it is:

NWN Login Name: Venture

Briefly outline your previous roleplay experience: I played and DM'd 1st edition AD&D about 25 years ago, and, not having a local gaming group, started with NWN1 upon its release in the hopes of rekindling that magic. I played the first EverQuest, but became tired of that due to the lack of roleplaying. I DM'd a weekly NWN campaign for 3 years for a small group I found at Neverwinter Connections, and have been DMing a similarly small campaign for NWN2 since May. (Fenixphire, one of your DM's, plays with us in that campaign. She is the one who suggested I apply here). I also played as a player in some one-shots, and a short campaign, for NWN1.

What are your favoured character alignments/classes/races and why? I've always been partial to human rangers, usually good aligned. I like the element of the rugged individual, at home in the wilds. I also like playing rogues. I guess I like characters with a grittier feel to them, but I don't have it in me to play evil, to be honest.

What will your initial character concept be?

Name: Gryson Ripka
Race: Human
Class: Ranger
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Bio: Gryson's background is a bit more mundane than common fantasy fare, aside from one big motivating event that explains his presence in the Silver Marchs. Gryson is a young man who grew up in a farming family, and who was engaged to be married. He learned some very basic skills to fend for himself, and live off the land a bit, as the family farm was located on the outskirts of civilization near Procampur (in the Vast), far to the east. Before his marriage, though, his fiancé called off the wedding, devastating and humiliating him. One night shortly thereafter, he snuck into her room to try to reason with her. As he climbed into her bedroom window, a man there attacked him, thinking him to be an intruder. Amid his ex-fiancé's nearby screams, a struggle ensued in the darkness between Gryson and the attacker, and when it ended, his attacker lay dead with a dagger in his chest. His fiancé, sobbing hysterically, lit a bedside candle, and in the light Gryson saw his brother dead at his feet. It was then he learned the reason for his fiancé calling off the engagement - she was having an affair with his brother.

His ex-fiancé vowed to never speak with him again, and his rigid family never really forgave him for the death of the favored son. A devastated Gryson left the Procampur area, looking to restart his life, and learned to live off of the land. He headed west, across the Dragon Reach, to Sembia. He aimlessly worked his way west from there, both on foot, in caravans, and with other travelers. He has survived partially due to his basic skills, but mostly due to luck and the help of strangers. He has recently arrived in the Silver Marches, and is unfamiliar with the area.

The one gameplay mechanic that I need to figure out with this character: He is currently a loner because of the above events, which explains why he is the typical "ranger type," often in the wild. So, I would need to think of a reason to have him interact with others. Perhaps this comes just with a need for at least some human interaction. He does have a good heart underneath it all, so it wouldn't be unheard of for him to help other travelers, or at least keep a watchful eye over them, from a distance.

Gryson carries a guilt with him, as he blames himself for the events that transpired that night. He is somewhat quiet and introspective. For now, if I'm accepted, I plan on playing him as a bit curt, but with the possibility of opening up later. He is a bit unbalanced now too, but getting better. He carries a scar on his cheek- the results of a form of self-inflicted punishment that he regularly imposed upon himself shortly after his brother's death. He would reopen this wound frequently in the weeks after his brother's death, but as he has slowly come to his senses, he did that less and less. Every so often, though, in a dark moment, he causes the wound to bleed anew.

Underneath his current exterior, lies a kind, good man. It is just a matter of being able to put the past behind him, so that his true personality can come out.

What do you wish to achieve from joining the server as a player?

I'm looking for somewhere to go to have fun in a roleplay environment. I'd like to be able to develop Gryson, although I'm not sure yet exactly where that will take him. Since I'm spending much of my free time building my own campaign as our group goes, I won't be a hardcore, always online player, but someone who plays when he can. Thanks for considering this application.

Very nice. I don't see any reason they would not appove this, though I don't really have any say. (There are only 2 DMs that get to decide.)

It's a great application, though. And I'm looking forwared to both playing with you player to player, and to turning the tables a bit. :D

Not sure if you have been told yet, but I saw that your app was moved to the approved thread. :D

Whoo hoo! I'm very looking forward to catching you around there sometime. Not sure how much we will get to interact, but as I play lots of differnt kinds of PCs, I am sure at least one will take it in to their head to talk to the ranger. ;)

Yep, got the password last night. I'm going to be away for a few days starting Friday, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get on, but I will try soon. Looking forward to it.
